Turkish-Speaking Immigration Attorney in Austin

1. Book an appointment. DPS offices do not take walk-ins. The DPS scheduler books up to six months ahead; choose the "Original" service for a first license. DPS's wait-time report of September 16, 2026 showed first-time appointments about 14 days out at the Pflugerville Mega Center, 17 at Austin North, Austin South and Georgetown, and 25 at Austin Northwest. Road tests were 42 to 69 days out. Every Austin-area office offers a limited number of same-day slots at its kiosk. There is no DPS license office in Round Rock or Cedar Park. 2. Bring original documents. Photocopies are not accepted. DPS's document check tool builds a personal checklist.
3. Complete ITAD. If you are 25 or older, finish the one-hour Impact Texas Adult Drivers video before the road test; the certificate is valid for 90 days. If you are 18 to 24, a 6-hour adult driver education course is also required.
4. Take the tests. The knowledge test is offered only in English or Spanish, and interpreters are not allowed during the test. Bring an insured, registered car for the road test.
5. Pay the fee. You leave with a temporary license; the card arrives by mail in 2 to 3 weeks.

Which documents do I need?

• Lawful presence: green card (I-551), EAD (I-766), or a valid passport + visa + I-94. DPS verifies this with DHS; if verification is not instant, you can track its status online.
• Identity: a green card, an EAD and "passport + visa + I-94" also count as primary ID. A foreign passport alone is only a supporting document.
• SSN: give your number if you have one. If you are not eligible for an SSN, you sign a DL-13 affidavit at the office. That works for a regular license but not for a commercial license (CDL).
• Texas address: two documents with your name and address, one proving 30 days in Texas. A lease, an electric, water or internet bill from the last 180 days, a bank statement, a pay stub or a USCIS notice all work. Your City of Austin Utilities bill counts.
• Vehicles: Texas insurance for each vehicle you own, plus Texas registration if you are surrendering an out-of-state license. If you own a car, register it first. If you own no vehicle, you say so on the form.

Family members who will not drive can get a Texas ID card with the same documents. Texas does not let you hold a license and an ID card at the same time. Since May 7, 2025, domestic flights accept only REAL ID cards (marked with a star) or a passport.

• Visitors and newcomers: a license that is not in English or Spanish must be translated. An International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention covers this; get it in your home country before you travel, because it is not issued in the U.S.
• Age and vehicle: the international agreements cover drivers 18 to 75 in private passenger vehicles.
• After you move: residents must get a Texas license within 90 days. A foreign license does not waive the 6-hour course for drivers aged 18 to 24.
• Renting a car: rental companies may ask for the International Driving Permit too. USA.gov notes you may need both.

Coming from Türkiye? Turkish licenses are not on the exchange list, so the first-license steps above apply. Türkiye is party to the 1949 Geneva Convention, so a Turkish license with an International Driving Permit obtained in Türkiye works for visits.

1. Buy Texas insurance. Minimum liability is $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Out-of-state insurance that meets these limits is accepted; bring the declarations page.
2. Get an emissions test. Travis and Williamson counties require a yearly emissions test for gas vehicles 2 to 24 years old; the station fee is up to $11.50. Travis County accepts only tests done in Travis or Williamson County, within 90 days before your sticker expires. Hays County (Kyle, Buda, San Marcos) and Bastrop have no emissions test. Safety inspections for most cars ended on January 1, 2025. Find a station with the DPS station locator.
3. Visit the tax office. Bring your out-of-state title or most recent registration receipt (a temporary registration is not accepted), photo ID, proof of insurance and the Vehicle Inspection Report. Form 130-U is completed at the tax office or a title service. If the car is financed, bring the lienholder's name, address and first lien date.
4. Then get your license. Travis County says to register your vehicle before applying for a Texas license, because DPS asks for it when you apply.

Which ID works for a first registration?

Under a TxDMV rule in force since March 5, 2026, a first Texas registration needs one of these, and none may be expired:

• A REAL ID license or ID card from any state, or a license from a state that requires proof of lawful presence (Texas included)
• A U.S. passport
• A foreign passport plus an I-94 (not in parole status), a green card, or an unexpired U.S. immigrant visa

A foreign passport alone is no longer enough. ID checks extend to registration renewals from January 1, 2027. Travis County's ID requirements page has the full list.

Travis County tax offices: headquarters at the Nelda Wells Spears Building, 2433 Ridgepoint Dr, Austin 78754 (vehicle walk-in 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays), plus Pflugerville (15822 Foothill Farms Loop), Northwest Austin (8110 N FM 620 Rd), Southeast Austin (4011 McKinney Falls Pkwy) and Oak Hill (8656 W Hwy 71, Building B). Offices take walk-ins, and lines close early when offices reach capacity. Card payments cost $3 up to $100 and 3% above that. The old 5501 Airport Blvd address is no longer a vehicle office.

Travis County residents only: since July 8, 2025, the Travis County office handles only people who live in the county. Prove your address with a lease, a utility bill or your insurance. Most of Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown and Leander is in Williamson County, so use the Williamson County tax office (512-943-1601). Kyle, Buda and San Marcos are in Hays County.

• Who runs what: since November 9, 2024, HCTRA (Harris County Toll Road Authority) bills TxDOT's Loop 1 (north of Parmer Lane), SH 45 North, SH 45 Southeast and SH 130. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) runs 183A Toll, 290 Toll, the MoPac Express Lanes, 71 Toll Lane, 45SW, 183 Toll and the 183 Express Lanes. TxDOT's Austin page maps them all.
• Getting a tag: open an EZ TAG account with HCTRA, call 281-875-3279, or visit the TxTag Customer Service Center at 12719 Burnet Road (weekdays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Existing TxTags keep working, but new and replacement tags are EZ TAGs.
• Tags that work here: TxTag, EZ TAG, TollTag, K-TAG, PIKEPASS, ExpressToll and SunPass, so a Dallas TollTag works in Austin. A tag gets the lowest rates in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and most of Florida. One tag per windshield; do not move stickers between cars.
• No tag: you can receive an EZ Invoice from HCTRA and a separate bill from CTRMA, both at higher rates plus fees. Each CTRMA mailed bill adds a $1 processing charge, and you have 30 days to pay before late fees. Pay at PayMobilityBill.com or (833) 762-8655.
• Rental cars: tolls go through the rental agreement, usually PlatePass or Highway Toll Administration, and fees vary by company. You cannot move your own tag sticker to a rental.

After two paid rides in a service day, the rest are free. The monthly cap works only with the Umo app or the free CapMetro Reloadable Fare Card, sold at the Transit Store (1705 Guadalupe St) and participating H-E-B stores. Seniors, riders with disabilities and military ID holders pay reduced fares.

Fares may change: CapMetro is considering raising the local fare to $1.50 from January 10, 2027, with a Board vote scheduled for September 28, 2026. Check the current fare on CapMetro's fare page.

• Tap to Pay: a contactless card, Apple Pay or Google Pay works on buses only, not on the train. American Express is not accepted. Plan trips in the Transit app and pay in Umo.
• Airport to downtown: Route 20 leaves from the lower level just outside baggage claim every 15 to 30 minutes, seven days a week, and continues to UT. After midnight, Route 483 Night Owl runs.
• Taxis and rideshare: pickup is under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility behind the Red Garage. The South Terminal closed on April 1, 2026, so every airline now uses the Barbara Jordan Terminal.
• Rail (Red Line, Route 550): 10 stations from downtown to Leander. CapMetro lists service Monday to Thursday 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 5 a.m. to midnight and Saturday 10 a.m. to midnight, with no Sunday listed. Station machines take cash only; use Umo or pay the conductor by card.
• Flying to Istanbul: there is no nonstop from Austin. Turkish Airlines serves Houston and Dallas, and AUS has nonstops to Houston IAH (United) and DFW (American). You can also connect in Amsterdam, Frankfurt or London.

1. Check your address. Austin Energy is a not-for-profit enterprise of the City of Austin, and the City Council sets its rates. Its service area covers Austin plus all or part of Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Bee Cave, Lakeway, Rollingwood, West Lake Hills, Sunset Valley and Del Valle. Outside it, a suburb may be in the competitive market or served by a co-op or another city utility. Ask before you sign a lease.
2. Start service. City of Austin Utilities Customer Care: 512-494-9400 (weekdays 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), Online Customer Care, or a walk-in center. Starting electric or water service costs $20; trash service costs $15.
3. Avoid the deposit. Residential service requires a $200 deposit. It is waived if you enroll in AutoPay and paperless eBill and stay in both for 12 consecutive billing cycles; drop either, or have a payment returned, and the $200 is billed. A reference letter from your current electric, gas or water utility (no late payments or disconnections in the last 12 cycles), or a landlord letter if utilities were included in your rent, also works.

Refunds: a deposit you paid comes back with interest after 12 on-time bills. Rate increase: under the City's 2026-27 budget, the typical household's combined electricity, water, trash, drainage and cleanup charges rise by about $14.34 a month from October 1, 2026.

If your suburb is in the competitive market, the Dallas rules apply: compare plans on Power to Choose, pick the retail provider yourself, and check each plan's Electricity Facts Label (EFL) at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh.

• Starting service: there is no separate water signup; it starts on the same account as your electricity. The bill shows water, wastewater, trash, drainage and a street fee together.
• Collection day: carts at the curb by 5:30 a.m., at least 5 feet apart and away from cars, mailboxes, trees and wires. My Schedule gives your calendar and text or email reminders. Pickup slides a day after New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
• Cost: Austin uses pay-as-you-throw. The monthly charge depends on the trash cart size you choose and includes a base fee that covers recycling, compost, bulky and hazardous waste service. Downsizing your cart is free. New rates take effect on October 1, 2026; see the rates page for current amounts.
• Bulky items, brush and hazardous waste: there is no fixed calendar any more. Book up to three pickups per service each year in the Austin Recycles app, online or through 3-1-1 (512-974-2000). Items set out without an appointment are not collected. Put them out by 5:30 a.m. on the appointment date. Appliances (doors removed) and up to 8 car tires (rims removed) are accepted.
• Apartments: city curbside service covers single-family homes up to fourplexes; larger complexes usually have their own hauler, so check your lease. The Clean Community Fee still applies.

3-1-1: open and track requests in the app or at 311.austintexas.gov. Non-emergency police reports go through iReportAustin.com. For emergencies, always call 911.

Austin Public Library card: free if your address is in Austin's full-purpose city limits, the 2-mile or 5-mile ETJ, or a limited-purpose area; the City's jurisdictions map shows which applies. Apply online, then pick up the card at any of 21 locations with photo ID and proof of address. Accepted IDs include a passport, a non-U.S. driver's license, a consular ID and a green card. For address, a bill or bank statement from the last 60 days, a lease, a pay stub or postmarked mail works, and digital documents are fine. Cards last 3 years. Adults can get a photo Enhanced Library Card, which Central Health accepts as ID for MAP. Help: 512-974-7475.

Flood alerts: for flash floods, the City asks residents to sign up at WarnCentralTexas.org and to check ATXFloods.com for closed roads. Never drive through high water: six inches of moving water can carry a car away. Turn around, don't drown.

• Last month's rent: you may not use the deposit as last month's rent; doing so in bad faith can cost three times the rent.
• Repairs: for conditions that materially affect health or safety, give the landlord written notice (certified mail is safest). Seven days is presumed reasonable. The landlord must provide security devices such as deadbolts and door viewers.
• Retaliation: for 6 months after a good-faith complaint, the landlord may not evict you or raise the rent in retaliation.
• Move-out notice: a lease clause requiring advance notice as a condition of the refund is enforceable only if it is underlined or in bold. Check your lease for it.
• Evictions: SB 38 rewrote Texas eviction procedure from January 1, 2026, and only the Legislature may now change it. Do not rely on older news about Austin-specific eviction notice rules.

• How: online on the TCAD site, by mail with Form 50-114, or in person at 850 E. Anderson Ln, Austin 78752. Main line 512-834-9317, exemption helpline 512-873-1560. TCAD acts on applications within 90 days. Once granted, you do not reapply every year.
• Bought mid-year: if the previous owner had no exemption and you claim none elsewhere, you may qualify from your move-in date.
• Turning 65: the exemption starts the year you turn 65 and freezes your school taxes at a ceiling, which you can carry to a new Texas homestead.
• Williamson County homes (Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown) apply online through Williamson CAD.

Amounts are from TCAD's 2026 exemption listing. The City of Austin's 2026-27 property tax rate is $0.579948 per $100 of value; county, school district and ACC rates are added on top.

1. Find your district. Your address decides it, not the city name: Round Rock, Leander, Pflugerville and Eanes have their own districts. The TEA district locator checks by address; within Austin ISD, use the 2026-27 School Finder. Austin ISD closed 10 school buildings for 2026-27 and boundary changes go to a Board vote in October 2026, so check by address rather than an old list.
2. Register online. Create an Enroll Austin account and add your child. The student ID is generated once the annual forms are complete. Help line: 512-414-1700.
3. Provide documents. The child's birth certificate or passport, immunization record, a parent photo ID (a passport works) and an electric, gas or water bill, lease or mortgage statement from the last 45 days. The child's Social Security card is optional.
4. New to U.S. schools? Register at your assigned campus; campus staff help with enrollment and language support. Every Austin ISD secondary campus offers ESL. International High School, the district's newcomer high school, closed as a campus for 2026-27, and its students now get newcomer support at their home campus.

• Grace periods: missing records do not block enrollment. Parents have 30 days for identity documents, and 90 days for a certified birth certificate of a child born outside the U.S.
• Pre-K: Austin ISD Pre-K is not free for everyone. It is free for children who are 3 or 4 by September 1 and meet a state criterion, such as limited English, family income, homelessness, military family or foster care. Others can pay tuition: $700 a month for full-day Pre-K4 and $350 a month for half-day Pre-K3. Applications opened April 1, 2026 and stay open until campuses fill. Every Pre-K applicant must show proof of income.
• Vaccines (K-12): DTaP/Tdap, polio, MMR, hepatitis A and B, and varicella, plus a Tdap booster and meningococcal vaccine in 7th grade. Records must show month, day and year and be validated by a physician or clinic. Provisional enrollment is possible if at least one dose of each vaccine has been given.

• Central Health MAP and MAP Basic: not insurance and not federally funded, but coverage programs run by Travis County's hospital district. They cover doctor visits, dental, prescriptions, specialty care, hospital services and behavioral health. Income over the last 30 days counts: the monthly limit is $2,660 for one person and $5,500 for a family of four. Apply online, by phone at 512-978-8130, option 1 (weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., interpreters available), or in person by appointment. Bring proof of a Travis County address (lease, utility bill or mail from the last 30 days), photo ID (a foreign passport or an Austin Public Library photo card works), proof of income and household size. MAP renews every 6 months, MAP Basic every 12.
• CommUnityCare: Central Health's clinic network treats patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay. It is not a free clinic; if you are not on MAP, fees follow a sliding scale based on income. Appointments: 512-978-9015 (bilingual staff and interpreters).
• Non-emergencies: CommUnityCare's Convenient Care offers same-day care for adults and children 6 months or older, with or without insurance. Official pages show differing location names; confirm the current location and hours through the clinic directory or 512-978-9015. This service does not replace an emergency department.
• Buying insurance: Texas uses the federal HealthCare.gov marketplace. Open enrollment for 2027 starts November 1; sign up by December 15 for coverage from January 1.
• 988: the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline answers calls, texts and chats 24/7, with phone interpreters in more than 240 languages.

• Where: Travis County Clerk, Recording Division, Civil & Family Courthouse, 1700 Guadalupe St., 4th Floor, Suite 4.300, Austin 78701, (512) 854-9188. The site lists weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while its FAQ says 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., so arrive before 4:30. Ceremonies are not performed at the office; it provides a list of judges who can officiate.
• ID: a driver's license, state ID, passport or certified birth certificate. The ID may be expired by no more than 2 years.
• Twogether in Texas: a premarital course certificate from the past year lowers the fee to $20 and waives the 72-hour wait.
• After the ceremony: the officiant returns the license within 30 days, by mail or in person; it is recorded and returned to you. A certified copy costs $6. The State of Texas issues only verification letters.

• City of Austin Vital Records: 7201 Levander Loop, Building C, Austin 78702 (Betty Dunkerley Campus), 512-972-4784, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., walk-in applications until 4:15 p.m. You can also order online through VitalChek (3 to 10 business days, extra fees) or by mail with a notarized application (2 to 3 weeks).
• Texas DSHS Vital Statistics: 1100 W. 49th St., Austin 78756, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 888-963-7111. In person you usually get the record the same day; card payments add a $2.25 fee. Long or short form $22; ordering online through Texas.gov is easiest.
• Long or short form: ask for the long form for a passport, an apostille, immigration matters or foreign citizenship registration. The short form is fine for school, a driver's license or a job.
• Born outside Austin: births at suburban hospitals, such as the one in Bee Cave, are not registered with the City. Births in Travis County outside Austin city limits are recorded by that precinct's Justice of the Peace court. The Travis County Clerk holds only 1903 to 1956 records.
• ID: a green card, EAD or U.S. visa counts as primary ID. Under the DSHS list, a foreign passport with a U.S. visa is only secondary ID, so bring a second document.
• SSN: if you request it during hospital birth registration, the card arrives by mail and no SSA visit is needed.

• What to bring: current immigration documents (green card, I-94 or EAD) with a valid passport, and a birth certificate if you have it. No photocopies or notarized copies. SSA suggests waiting 10 days after arrival so DHS records can be verified.
• F-1 and J-1: an SSN is available only once you are authorized to work (on-campus job, CPT, OPT), not just for enrolling in school.
• Appointments: field offices serve by appointment, weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. National line: 1-800-772-1213.
• Austin-area offices: Austin (1029 Camino La Costa, 78752) in North Austin and Austin South (5508 US-290 W, Building B, 78735). Nearby offices are in Georgetown (3010 Williams Dr, Suite 150) and San Marcos (900 Bugg Lane, Suite 200). Check which one serves you with the SSA office locator before you go.
• Replacement card: free, often started online; the card arrives in 5 to 10 business days.

According to SSA, you do not need an SSN for a driver's license, school registration or private health insurance.

1. Complete Form W-7 and attach it to your federal return unless an exception applies.
2. Get documents verified. Mail originals to the IRS ITIN unit in Austin, use a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA), or book a free document review at an IRS office. With a CAA or IRS office, your passport does not go in the mail.
3. Wait. Processing takes about 7 weeks, or 9 to 11 weeks during tax season (January 15 to April 30).

• Austin IRS office: Taxpayer Assistance Center, 825 E. Rundberg Lane, Austin, TX 78753. It is one of the offices that review ITIN documents in person and hand them back at the end of the appointment. Appointments at 844-545-5640; they can take several weeks. Phone interpreters are available in every office.
• Do not mix up the addresses: the IRS ITIN Operation also has an Austin mailing address (P.O. Box 149342), but it is not an office you can visit.
• Expiration: an ITIN not used on a federal return for three years in a row expires.

• LLC: Form 205, online through SOSDirect or by mail. Card payments carry a 2.7% fee. No notarization needed.
• DBA in person: fill out the application online on the Travis County Clerk's site, then go in to record it. Every owner must be present with valid government-issued ID. The fee is $23, plus $0.50 for each additional owner and $2 for each acknowledgment done in the office. Cash, personal checks and credit cards are accepted.
• DBA by mail: send the notarized form with a check or money order payable to "Travis County Clerk" to Recording Division, Travis County Clerk, P.O. Box 149325, Austin, TX 78714. Questions: (512) 854-9188. The clerk also runs a name search for $10.
• LLCs and corporations file assumed names with the Secretary of State (Form 503), not the county. A certificate lasts up to 10 years.
• Franchise tax: annual report due May 15. The no-tax-due threshold for 2026 and 2027 is $2.65 million in revenue; LLCs below it pay no tax but must still file a Public Information Report. An LLC formed in 2026 files its first report by May 15, 2027.

• Who still qualifies for SNAP: refugees and asylees no longer qualify on that status alone, but they skip the 5-year wait once they become green card holders. The 5-year wait still applies to other green card holders, with exceptions such as children under 18.
• U.S.-citizen children in the household may still receive benefits in their own right.
• The new public charge rule: for green card applications filed on or after September 18, 2026, officers may consider any means-tested benefit (SNAP, Medicaid, housing assistance and others) received on or after that date. Benefits received earlier count only if they were cash assistance or long-term institutional care. Benefits received by family members are generally not counted.
• Who is exempt: humanitarian categories such as asylees and refugees, T and U visa holders, VAWA self-petitioners and TPS. Family-based, most employment-based and diversity visa applicants are subject to it.
• Local programs in Travis County: Central Health's MAP and similar local health programs are also income-based. How they will be treated under the new rule is not yet clear, so ask before you enroll if a green card is in your plans.
• Litigation: more than 20 states and several cities sued on September 14, 2026. Filing a lawsuit does not suspend the rule; check the current status before you apply for anything.

1. Log in to your USCIS account and open Change of Address. Reporting online satisfies the legal requirement; no paper AR-11 is needed.
2. Enter the receipt number of every pending case. Otherwise notices may still go to the old address.
3. Tell USPS separately. A post office change of address does not update USCIS, and USPS does not forward USCIS mail.
4. If you are in court proceedings, file Form EOIR-33/IC within 5 days. The court changes your address only through this form.
5. Update ICE too. If DHS released you at the border or inside the U.S. (with a Notice to Appear, parole, ATD or a notice to report), call ICE's DRIL line within 5 business days of moving: 1-888-351-4024, weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. Check-ins can be scheduled at checkin.ice.gov.

A and G visa holders and Visa Waiver visitors are exempt from the USCIS address requirement.

• About the address: USCIS no longer publishes a page for each field office. For an interview, rely on the address printed on your notice, not on a list.
• Appointments and questions: USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283, or book online. Appointments are free.
• Processing times: on the USCIS processing times page, pick the form, category and San Antonio as the office. Times update monthly.
• Biometrics: the center is assigned on your I-797C notice; you do not choose it. You can reschedule for good cause. Our biometrics guide covers what to bring.

• San Antonio court: weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., filing window the same hours. There is security screening, and cameras and recording devices are not allowed in courtrooms. Visitor parking and public transit are available.
• Pearsall Immigration Court: 566 Veterans Drive, Pearsall, TX 78061, 210-368-5700. The T. Don Hutto Detention Center in Taylor also falls under ICE's San Antonio office.
• Online lookup: ACIS needs only your A-number (A + 8 or 9 digits). Your hearing notice is still the official source; the system may show new dates late.
• ICE ERO San Antonio: responsible for Central Texas, Austin included. 1777 NE Loop 410, Floor 15, San Antonio 78217, (210) 283-4750. If you have a check-in, talk to your attorney before you go.

Where do I find my I-94, and how do I fix an error?

Download your most recent I-94 from CBP's website. Errors made at entry (wrong visa class, name or admit-until date) are corrected by CBP Deferred Inspection. There is no such office at Austin's airport. The nearest is at San Antonio International Airport, Tuesday and Thursday noon to 2 p.m., (210) 821-6965. Houston IAH's office is open Tuesday to Thursday 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., (281) 230-4600 ext. 1. They fix only mistakes made at the time of entry.

• At DPS: the first question on the license application is citizenship. If you are not a citizen, answer "no" and skip the voter registration questions.
• Consequences: registering or voting as a noncitizen is a federal crime (18 U.S.C. 611 and 1015(f)) and a Texas felony. In immigration law it can mean permanent inadmissibility, deportability and denial of naturalization.
• Do not fill out voter registration forms handed out door to door or at events.
• Jury summons: Travis County builds its jury list from voter rolls and from everyone in the county with a Texas driver's license or DPS ID card, so noncitizens can be summoned. Respond on I-Jury and state that you are not a U.S. citizen. The county's FAQ says "citizen of this state," but the law requires U.S. citizenship. Ignoring a summons can bring a $100 to $1,000 fine.
• Watch for scams: callers pose as deputies or judges and demand money for a missed jury date. The county never asks for money, wire transfers or gift cards by phone. If in doubt, call the jury office at 512-854-9669.

Recently naturalized? The deadline to register for the November 3, 2026 election is October 5, 2026. Travis County voter registration: 2433 Ridgepoint Dr., 2nd floor, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 512-854-9473. Polling places and sample ballots are on VoteTravis.gov.

• Travis County District Clerk: 5325 Airport Blvd., 1st floor, Austin 78751. Walk-ins 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but appointments come first and walk-ins may stop early. The offices at 1700 Guadalupe St. (3rd floor, Room 3.100) and 8110 N FM 620 Road are appointment only. The county also takes passport photos for $14. Most appointments open Mondays at 8 a.m. for the following week. Phone 512-854-4295.
• Austin Public Library: Central Library, 710 W. César Chávez St., 2nd floor, Room 207. Appointment only; slots open up to 3 days ahead. Phone 512-974-9639.
• Other acceptance facilities: find post offices with the passport facility locator. These locations accept new applications (DS-11).
• Urgent travel: Houston Passport Agency, 1919 Smith St., 4th floor, Houston 77002, weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; or Dallas Passport Agency, 1100 Commerce St., Suite 1120. Appointment only, with proof of travel within 14 days (or a foreign visa needed within 28 days), plus the $60 expedite fee; 1-3 day return delivery is $23.36. Appointments are free; third parties charging for them are scams.
• Online renewal: for adults 25 and older with a 10-year passport, only at opr.travel.state.gov.

• Texas State Capitol: the building and guided tours are free.
• Harry Ransom Center: archive and museum on the UT campus, home to a Gutenberg Bible. Closed Mondays.
• Waterloo Greenway: 13 acres of new creekside park along Waller Creek downtown, opened June 6, 2026 and free every day.
• Austin Nature and Science Center: at the west end of Zilker Park, always free. Closed September 28 to October 11 for maintenance and ACL.
• Austin Central Library: 710 W. César Chávez St., downtown.
• Free on certain days: the Blanton on Tuesdays, The Contemporary Austin on Thursdays (under 18 free every day), Mexic-Arte on Sundays, the Bullock on the first Sunday of each month (October 4, November 1), the Texas Science & Natural History Museum on the fourth Sunday. The LBJ Library is free on October 12 and November 11, 2026.

• Military service (askerlik): men born in 2007 must complete their registration (yoklama) by December 31, 2026. The paid military service option (dövizle askerlik) for July to December 2026 is the foreign-currency equivalent of 472,653.60 TL, collected in Houston in U.S. dollars plus a $45 transfer fee, in person and by appointment only. Dual citizens born in the U.S. or who came before 18 can defer until the end of age 35.
• Mobile consulate: no mobile consular service has been announced for Austin so far. The last ones in Texas were in Richardson (Dallas area) in December 2024 and San Antonio in April 2015. Watch the consulate announcements for new dates. Powers of attorney are not available at mobile services.

• In person: Authentications Unit, 400 West 15th Street, Austin, TX 78701, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Friday are walk-in, but waits can exceed an hour and groups are limited to 2 people. Tuesday to Thursday requires an appointment. More than 10 documents go in a drop box, with about three days' processing.
• Payment: check, money order, credit or debit card, or cash (exact change only).
• By mail: Form 2102 to P.O. Box 13550, Austin, TX 78711-3550, with a check or money order payable to "Office of the Texas Secretary of State." Allow up to two weeks from receipt. Status: (512) 463-5705.
• A quick Austin route: for a child born within Austin city limits, get the long-form birth certificate from City of Austin Vital Records (about 30 minutes, $23) or the state office at 1100 W. 49th St. ($22), then walk in at the SOS on a Monday or Friday for a same-day apostille. A certified marriage record from the Travis County Clerk costs $6.
• Federal documents: U.S. Department of State, Office of Authentications, Form DS-4194, $20 per document.
• Notaries and translations: the translator's statement is signed before a Texas notary. Texas notaries generally require an ID issued by a U.S. state or the federal government; a green card or EAD qualifies, but a Turkish passport alone usually does not. Without such ID, a credible witness can vouch for you.

• U.S. clock changes: daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November: November 1, 2026 and March 14, 2027.
• Via Houston: United flies nonstop from Austin to IAH. Turkish Airlines' direct Houston to Istanbul flight takes about 12 hours on average.
• Via Dallas: American flies nonstop from Austin to DFW. Turkish Airlines' DFW to Istanbul flight averages 12 hours 10 minutes.
