01 · Driver's license
How do I get a driver's license in Cherry Hill?
Short answer
The New Jersey MVC (Motor Vehicle Commission) issues first licenses by appointment only. Since 2021, any New Jersey resident can get a Standard license regardless of immigration status. You need 6 Points of ID, one proof of New Jersey address, and an SSN, an ITIN or a notarized affidavit. A Turkish passport alone counts for 4 points. The fee is $24. Cherry Hill has no licensing center; the nearest are in Runnemede, Camden, Delanco and West Deptford.
Steps, documents and official links
- Pick your card. There are two options: a Standard license and a REAL ID. A Standard license does not require an SSN or proof of lawful U.S. presence, but it is not REAL ID-compliant: since May 7, 2025 it cannot be used on its own to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building, so carry another ID such as a passport. A REAL ID requires an SSN verified with the SSA and documents showing lawful presence. You can upgrade to REAL ID right away or when your Standard license is renewed.
- Book an appointment. First-time licenses, ID cards, permits, out-of-state or foreign transfers and knowledge tests are all by appointment. Book through the MVC appointment system. Licensing centers are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, closed Sundays.
- Get a permit and take the knowledge test. The first-license process starts with an Initial Permit, which gives you 2 years to finish every step. If you fail the vision or knowledge test, you can retake it after 7 days.
- Practice, then take the road test. With the permit you practice for 3 months if you are 21 or older, 6 months if you are younger. Drivers under 21 also need 50 supervised hours, 10 of them at night. If you fail the road test, you can retake it after 14 days. Passing gets you a probationary license first.

How do the 6 Points of ID add up?
You combine one primary document (4 points) with secondary documents to reach 6 points. On top of that you need one proof of New Jersey address and an SSN. If you are not eligible for an SSN, bring an official document showing your ITIN; if you are not eligible for either, sign the MVC's notarized affidavit. No document may be expired for more than 3 years, and documents not in English need a certified translation.

02 · Foreign license
Can I drive in New Jersey with a Turkish license?
Short answer
As a visitor, yes: the MVC lets you drive for up to 1 year on your foreign license if you also carry an International Driving Permit issued in your country of residence. Once you move to New Jersey, the MVC expects you to switch within 60 days. Türkiye is not on New Jersey's reciprocity list, so drivers with a Turkish license take both the knowledge test and the road test.
Steps, documents and official links
The MVC recognizes license exchanges without tests for two countries only: Taiwan and South Korea. A valid license from another U.S. state (Pennsylvania included), Washington, D.C., or a U.S. territory such as Puerto Rico or Guam can be transferred without tests: you get a 4-year New Jersey license and surrender the old one. A Turkish license is not on the list, so you follow the first-license steps above.
- Visitors: up to 1 year on a foreign license, together with an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in your country of residence. Get the IDP before you leave Türkiye.
- New residents: the MVC says to move your license and vehicle registration to New Jersey within 60 days of moving, or before your current license and registration expire, whichever comes first.
- Useful as ID: a Turkish driver's license together with another government-issued document counts as a 4-point primary document for a Standard license (see the 6 Points table).
- Studying: as of September 2026, the New Jersey Driver Manual is published in English, Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Gujarati, Korean, Arabic, Haitian-Creole and Portuguese. There is no Turkish edition.
03 · Car
How do I register a car in Cherry Hill, and where is the inspection station?
Short answer
After moving to New Jersey, you have 60 days to register your car. Get New Jersey insurance first, then title and register the car at an MVC licensing center by appointment. The title fee is $60. Most gas cars get an emissions inspection every two years; new cars are exempt for 5 years and fully electric vehicles are never inspected. The state inspection station is inside the township at 617 Hampton Road.
Steps, documents and official links
- Buy New Jersey insurance. Under the state's 2026 buyer's guide, the Standard Policy minimums are $35,000 per person and $70,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 per accident for property damage. The cheaper Basic Policy has no bodily injury liability by default (a $10,000 per accident option exists) and $5,000 of property damage coverage. You need an insurance ID card for each vehicle; an electronic card is accepted.
- Book an MVC appointment. Registration is by appointment only; the centers nearest Cherry Hill are in the license section. Bring the title, 6 Points of ID, your New Jersey insurance card or the company name and policy number, and a completed Form BA-49. A car coming from another state also needs an Application for Certificate of Ownership. Financed or leased cars need the lienholder's details.
- Pay the fees. The title is $60, $85 with one lien and $110 with two. The registration fee depends on the vehicle type and includes plates. Fully electric vehicles pay an annual fee that started at $250 on July 1, 2024 and rises by $10 a year for 4 years. For sales tax questions, call the Division of Taxation at 609-984-6206.
- Watch your inspection date. Inspections are every two years and can be done up to 2 months before the due date. Most gas passenger cars get an emissions-only inspection. Vehicles less than 5 model years old, fully electric vehicles and motorcycles are exempt.

Bring the originals of your license, registration and insurance card. Copies, faxes and PDFs are not accepted, except for electronic insurance cards. Besides the state stations, licensed private inspection facilities also inspect cars for a fee. Driving with an expired inspection sticker can bring a $100 to $200 fine or up to 30 days in jail, and the MVC can revoke the registration. Check the current list on the MVC inspection page.

04 · Tolls
What is E-ZPass, and what does it cost to cross into Philadelphia from Cherry Hill?
Short answer
New Jersey's toll tag is E-ZPass. An E-ZPass New Jersey account costs $1 a month, and the Standard Plan has no sign-up requirements. The four DRPA bridges between Cherry Hill and Philadelphia charge cars $6.00, collected only westbound into Pennsylvania; the trip back into New Jersey is free. Toll lanes take cash or E-ZPass only, with no credit cards or mobile payments.
Steps, documents and official links
DRPA bridges over the Delaware
The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) runs the Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross bridges. Tolls are paid only westbound, from New Jersey into Pennsylvania.
| Vehicle | Toll |
|---|---|
| Car, SUV, small truck, motorcycle | $6.00 |
| Car or small truck with a one-axle trailer | $10.50 |
| Trucks and motorhomes over 7,000 lbs | $18.00 ($9.00 per extra axle) |
These rates took effect on September 1, 2024, the first increase in 13 years. E-ZPass works only in E-ZPass lanes. Check the current schedule on the DRPA toll page.
Your E-ZPass account
- Opening an account: online at ezpassnj.com, by mail or by phone at (888) 288-6865. Tag holders may pay lower toll rates than drivers without a tag.
- No tag: cameras read the plate, and the toll bill goes by mail to the registered owner, usually within 30 days. Extra fees apply after the due date, and unpaid bills can go to a collection agency.
- Discount plans: plans used with an E-ZPass NJ tag include the Senior Citizens Discount Plan for drivers 65 and older and the Green Pass for vehicles rated at 45 MPG or more, or SULEV.
- NJ Turnpike: tolls depend on where you enter and exit. Check current rates on the New Jersey Turnpike Authority site.

06 · Electricity
How do I set up electricity and gas in Cherry Hill?
Short answer
PSE&G delivers electricity in Cherry Hill. Gas comes from PSE&G or South Jersey Gas depending on the address, so check a previous bill or ask the landlord; if in doubt, call both companies. PSE&G's online form asks for an SSN. No SSN, or prefer not to give it? Call 1-800-436-7734 to open the account by phone. You can also buy the energy itself from another supplier.
Steps, documents and official links
- Open a PSE&G electric account. The online form asks for the new address, a start date, your name, email, phone, date of birth and SSN. PSE&G sends the SSN to Experian to verify your identity and check your credit, and the result decides whether you pay a deposit. Without an SSN, call 1-800-436-7734, weekdays 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Find your gas company. Some Cherry Hill addresses get gas from PSE&G and others from South Jersey Gas. The Township's 2024 new-resident packet lists South Jersey Gas at 1-888-766-9900. South Jersey Gas's start-service page does not list ID or SSN requirements, so call and ask what it needs.
- Be home for the turn-on. If service at the address is off, PSE&G turns it on remotely or sends a technician. For an in-person visit, it recommends that someone 18 or older be at home.
- Choosing a supplier is optional. In New Jersey you can buy electricity and gas from a third-party supplier while your local utility keeps delivering and metering it. Compare suppliers, with fixed and variable rates, on NJ Power Switch, the official site of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU). The site is for education only; each supplier is responsible for its own prices and marketing.
07 · Water and trash
How do I start water service in Cherry Hill, and when is trash picked up?
Short answer
Cherry Hill has two water providers: depending on your street, New Jersey American Water (1-800-272-1325) or the Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission (856-663-0043). Sewer is billed separately, by the Township as a flat annual fee and by the Camden County sewer authority, CCMUA. Trash, recycling and yard waste are collected once a week on the same day. Bulk items go out on your regular day, with no appointment.
Steps, documents and official links
Water
- Which provider: ask your landlord or call the Township Tax Collector at 856-488-7880 to find out which one serves your address.
- New Jersey American Water: customer service 1-800-272-1325. It runs the H2O assistance program for customers behind on their bills and refers people to NJ 211 for other help.
- Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission (MPWC): a separate regional public utility, not part of the Township; phone 856-663-0043. The Township says MPWC charges are not included in its annual tax sale.
- Digging: state law requires you to call 1-800-272-1000 at least 4 full days before you dig.
Sewer
- Township fee: residential sewer is a flat annual fee due April 1, billed through the Tax Collector (856-488-7880). Homeowners 60 and older who live in the property get a 10% discount.

- CCMUA: the Camden County sewer authority bills separately. According to the Township's new-resident packet, its bills are due February 15, May 15, August 15 and November 15.
Trash and recycling
- Collection day: once a week, Monday through Friday depending on your street. Trash, recycling and yard waste go out on the same day. Set containers out after 5:30 p.m. the day before or before 7 a.m. on collection day, within 4 feet of the road and off the sidewalk. Take them in within 12 hours after collection ends.
- Holidays: no collection on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas; pickup shifts to the next day.
- Bulk trash: picked up on your regular day, with no appointment. A separate truck collects it, sometimes hours after the trash truck.

09 · Renting
How big can a security deposit be in Cherry Hill, and what should I check before I move in?
Short answer
In New Jersey, a security deposit can be no more than 1.5 months' rent, and it is due back within 30 days after you move out, with an itemized list of any deductions. In Cherry Hill, every change of tenant also needs a Township Rental Housing Certificate of Occupancy, and the tenant may not move in until it is issued. The Township also has a Rent Review Board that hears landlord rent-increase applications.
Steps, documents and official links
Cherry Hill rules
- Certificate of Occupancy: every rental unit is inspected at each change of tenant. The fee is $65, plus $20 where a lead-based paint inspection is required, and scheduling takes about two weeks. The landlord applies online or with the Department of Community Development at 820 Mercer Street (856-488-7870). "AS IS" clauses in a lease do not waive the inspection.
- Landlord duties: register the rental property with the Township and carry liability insurance ($500,000, or $300,000 for small owner-occupied multifamily buildings). Units built before 1978 get a lead-paint inspection at turnover and every 3 years.
- Rent Review Board: it hears landlord rent-increase applications and can order restitution for overcharges or needed repairs. Rent Review Officer: 856-488-7870. Ask your landlord in writing whether your building falls under the Township's rent-control rules, or call that number.
New Jersey deposit and eviction rules
- Increases: a yearly increase in the deposit cannot exceed 10% of the current deposit.
- Bank notice: the landlord keeps the deposit in an interest-bearing account at a New Jersey bank and, within 30 days of receiving it, tells you in writing the bank, account type, interest rate and amount. If the landlord does not, you can demand in writing that the deposit plus 7% a year be applied to rent; once that happens, the landlord cannot collect another deposit from you for the rest of the tenancy.
- Interest: the interest is yours, and the landlord may not deduct administrative fees from it. It is paid in cash each year or credited toward rent.
- Deductions: only for damage beyond ordinary wear and tear or money owed under the lease, and none while you still live there. The refund goes by personal delivery or certified or registered mail. If it comes back late or not at all, you can sue for double the deposit plus court costs.
- Faster refunds: 15 business days if the lease ended under the Safe Housing Act (domestic violence), and 5 business days if you were displaced by fire, flood or condemnation.
- Exemption: owner-occupied buildings with 2 or fewer rental units are exempt from the deposit rules, although the tenant can opt in with 30 days' written notice.
- Disputes: deposit claims up to $5,000 go to the Small Claims Section of Superior Court; $5,000 to $10,000 go to the Special Civil Part.
- Evictions: a New Jersey landlord needs one of the "good cause" grounds in the law to evict you or refuse to renew your lease. Changing the locks, removing your belongings or shutting off utilities without a court order is illegal. Only a judge can order an eviction; call the police if a landlord tries it.
10 · Home ownership

How do I enroll my child in school in Cherry Hill?
Short answer
Cherry Hill Public Schools registration starts with online pre-registration in the Genesis portal. You can finish online by uploading the documents, or in person by appointment at the Arthur Lewis Administration Building, 45 Ranoldo Terrace (856-429-5600, ext. 4429). You need a parent photo ID, two proofs of address (one must be a lease or mortgage statement), a birth certificate, immunization records, a physical and the latest report card. New Jersey schools may not require an SSN or ask about immigration status.
Steps, documents and official links
- Pre-register online. From the district's registration page, create a Genesis portal login with your email and a password. Fill out one district packet per child, and upload the Request for Student Records form and the latest report card. A Registration Office representative then calls or emails you to finalize enrollment.
- Gather documents. A parent photo ID issued by a government or public body, the child's birth certificate, the most recent immunization records, the latest report card or transfer card, and the district registration packet. If they apply, also bring an IEP or 504 plan, custody papers and TB test results.
- Choose proofs of address. You submit two. Each must show the parent's name and Cherry Hill address and be dated within the past two months, and one must be a mortgage statement or a copy of a lease. Renters add one more proof to the signed lease, such as voter registration, a driver's license, bank account information, a utility bill or a delivery receipt.
- Schedule the physical. Under New Jersey law, the physical must be done within 365 days before registration and handed to the school nurse within 30 days after. Students in grades 5 to 12 who may play sports need the state Sports Physical form.
- No lease? If you live with a Cherry Hill homeowner, use the district's Landlord Affidavit. The homeowner and you each submit two proofs of address and sign the form in front of a notary.
- Languages: the registration packet comes in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese. There is no Turkish version.
- Kindergarten: the child must turn 5 on or before October 1, and only a legal guardian may register. Registration for 2026-27 opened in December 2025, so watch the district's page for next year's dates.
- Free preschool: full-day (Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and free for eligible 3- and 4-year-olds, in district classrooms and partner sites. Preschool Office: 856-429-5600, ext. 4311.
- English learners: the district has an ESL page for immigrant families, and multilingual learners are identified under New Jersey procedures. The District Supervisor of Preschool and ESL is at 856-429-5600, ext. 4345.
- Before and after school: the district runs a School-Age Child Care (SACC) program.

Apply through the financial counselor or registration office at any acute care hospital, including Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Income limits are in the health care without insurance section.
Questions to ask before booking
- Are you accepting new patients? Are there age, income, insurance or residency requirements?
- Are visits, lab tests, medications and outside referrals charged separately?
- Which documents should I bring, and is an interpreter available?
For federally funded health centers that charge by income, use the HRSA health center finder; not every listed center is free.
14 · Marriage
How do I get a marriage license in Cherry Hill?
Short answer
In New Jersey, marriage licenses come from the municipality where either of you lives, not the county. If you live in Cherry Hill, apply at the Township Clerk's Office of Vital Statistics (820 Mercer Street) by appointment only: 856-488-7892. The state fee is $28. You need a witness 18 or older and proof of Cherry Hill residency. The application must be complete at least 72 hours before the license is issued; the Township suggests 5 days.
Steps, documents and official links
- Where: in Cherry Hill if Applicant A lives here. If Applicant A lives out of state, in the town where Applicant B lives. If both of you live out of state, in the town where the ceremony will take place, and the license is valid only there.
- Appointments: 856-488-7892. The Township's marriage page lists Tuesday to Thursday and its Vital Statistics page lists Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., so confirm the days when you call.
- What to bring: the completed marriage application; a driver's license, passport, or state or federal ID; a witness 18 or older (the officiant cannot be the witness); and proof of Cherry Hill residency. If your license does not show a Cherry Hill address, bring two alternatives, such as a vehicle registration or insurance card, voter card, a utility bill or bank statement dated within 90 days, or a W-2. Bring certified English translations of foreign-language documents.
- Information you will need: Social Security numbers "if applicable"; both applicants' parents' full birth names and state or country of birth; the officiant's name and address and the town of the ceremony; and the date and court of any earlier divorce.
- Fee: the Township's pages do not list a fee. The state fee is $28. Ask how to pay when you book.
- Timing: there is a 72-hour wait. The state Department of Health says the application is valid for 6 months.
- Who can officiate: a minister of any religion (including an imam), certain officials such as a mayor or County Clerk, civil celebrants and judges of certain courts.
- After the ceremony: order certified copies from the registrar of the town where you married. The paper the officiant gives you is not a legal copy. For ceremonies in Cherry Hill, request a raised-seal copy with the Township's information request form.
15 · Birth
We live in Cherry Hill. Where do we get our baby's birth certificate?
Short answer
A birth is filed with the local registrar of the town where the baby is born. Cherry Hill's Office of Vital Statistics issues certified copies only for births that took place in Cherry Hill. If your baby was born at a hospital in another town, order the certificate from that town, or from the New Jersey Office of Vital Statistics and Registry in Trenton once the record reaches the state. State orders go through VitalChek online.
Steps, documents and official links
- Ask the hospital first: after the birth, ask the hospital's medical records or birth registration desk which municipality holds the record. You can request the certificate from that town's registrar.
- Cherry Hill office: Township Clerk, Office of Vital Statistics, 820 Mercer Street, 856-488-7892. Requests are accepted only from people with a direct link to the record. Forms come in English and Spanish.
- State office: the New Jersey Office of Vital Statistics and Registry holds birth records from 1925 on. Order through VitalChek online 24/7 or by phone at 877-622-7549. Same-day walk-in service is at 140 E. Front Street in Trenton; the counter has not taken cash since June 18, 2026. Mail: PO Box 360, Trenton, NJ 08625-0360.
- Privacy: vital records are not public and cannot be searched online. Check fees and accepted IDs on the state's Vital Statistics page.
- Which copy: ask for the certified long form for a U.S. passport application or to register the birth in Türkiye.
- Child's U.S. passport: for children under 16, a passport book is $100 plus a $35 acceptance fee, and a passport card is $15 plus $35. See the passport section.
- SSN: for your baby's Social Security number, see the SSN section.
16 · Social Security
How do I get a Social Security number in Cherry Hill?
Short answer
SSNs are issued only to people with work authorization or a legally required reason. If you asked for one in your immigrant visa application, on Form I-485 or on an EAD application, the card is mailed to you. Otherwise, start online and visit an SSA office by appointment within 45 days. Cherry Hill and neighboring Mount Laurel each have an office; it is free.
Steps, documents and official links
| SSA office | Address | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Cherry Hill | 6 Executive Campus, Suite 200, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002 | (866) 931-2879 |
| Mount Laurel | 532 Fellowship Road, Suite E, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054 | (866) 837-5002 |
- Which office: both are open weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. SSA assigns offices by ZIP code, not distance, so confirm with the SSA office locator before you go. National line: 1-800-772-1213.
- What to bring: current immigration documents (green card, I-94 or EAD) with a valid passport, and a birth certificate if you have it. No photocopies or notarized copies. SSA suggests waiting 10 days after arrival so DHS records can be verified.
- F-1 and J-1: an SSN is available only once you are authorized to work (on-campus job, CPT, OPT), not just for enrolling in school.
- Lost card: replacement is free, usually started online, and the card arrives in 5 to 10 business days.
According to SSA, you do not need an SSN for a driver's license, school registration or private health insurance. In New Jersey, state regulations bar schools from requiring one for enrollment (see school enrollment).
17 · Taxes
Does New Jersey have a state income tax, and how do I get an ITIN in Cherry Hill?
Short answer
Yes. Unlike Texas, New Jersey taxes income: Cherry Hill residents file a state return (Form NJ-1040) with the NJ Division of Taxation in addition to the federal return. People who must file but cannot get an SSN (for example H-4 spouses without an EAD) get an ITIN with Form W-7 and use it on both returns. The IRS office in Cherry Hill reviews ITIN documents in person, by appointment.
Steps, documents and official links
- State return: Form NJ-1040, filed with the NJ Division of Taxation. Check current rates and forms on the Division's site.
- No separate state number: New Jersey uses the ITIN issued by the IRS. An ITIN is a tax number only; it does not authorize work or change immigration status.
- NJEITC: according to the state's EITC FAQ, New Jersey's earned income credit generally follows the federal EITC requirements, and the federal EITC is not available to ITIN filers. If you file with an ITIN only, ask a tax preparer before claiming it.
- Moving from Texas? Factor the state tax into any salary offer.
How do I get an ITIN?
- Complete Form W-7 and attach it to your federal return unless an exception applies.
- Get documents verified. Mail originals to the IRS in Austin, use a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA), or book a free document review at an IRS office. With a CAA or IRS office, your passport does not go in the mail; documents are returned at the end of the appointment.
- Wait. Processing takes about 7 weeks, or 9 to 11 weeks during tax season (January 15 to April 30).
- Cherry Hill IRS office: according to the IRS list, the Taxpayer Assistance Center in Cherry Hill is one of the offices that verify ITIN documents in person. An older IRS document gives its address as 51 Haddonfield Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002; confirm it when you book or with the IRS office locator.
- Other offices in the state: Edison, Freehold, Mays Landing, Newark, Paramus, Parsippany, Paterson and Springfield.
- Appointments: IRS offices work by appointment only: 844-545-5640. It can take several weeks to get one.
- Expiration: an ITIN not used on a federal return for three years in a row expires.
18 · Starting a business
How do I start an LLC in Cherry Hill, and where do I register a trade name (DBA)?
Short answer
A New Jersey LLC is formed by filing a Certificate of Formation with the state's Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services for $100. To keep the company's record current, you file a $75 Annual Report every year. Sole proprietors and general partnerships that use a name other than their own register the trade name with the County Clerk; for Cherry Hill, that is the Camden County Clerk. Some businesses also need a township license.
Steps, documents and official links
- Formation: file the Certificate of Formation online through the NJ Business Formation portal. The $100 fee is lower than the $300 Texas charges.
- Annual Report: $75 a year. It keeps the company's members or managers, business address and registered agent current in the public record.
- Trade name: sole proprietors and general partnerships register with the County Clerk of the county where they do business. Cherry Hill is in Camden County. Ask the Camden County Clerk about the fee and required documents before you file.
- LLCs and corporations register an alternate name with the state Division of Revenue, not the county.
- Township licenses: Cherry Hill licenses food businesses (restaurants, food trucks, vending), gas stations, secondhand and precious-metals dealers and more. If you rent out a home, landlord registration is required too. See the township licensing page or call the Township Clerk's licensing line at (856) 488-7892.
- Food inspections: Camden County Environmental Health inspects restaurants and food trucks: (856) 374-6052.
19 · Public benefits
Can immigrants in Cherry Hill get SNAP or NJ FamilyCare, and does it affect a green card?
Short answer
In New Jersey, SNAP runs through county boards of social services; Cherry Hill is in Camden County. Since July 4, 2025, only U.S. citizens, green card holders, Cuban/Haitian entrants and COFA citizens can generally get SNAP. And under the new public charge rule in effect since September 18, 2026, benefits received after that date may be held against you in a future green card application.
Steps, documents and official links
- Who still qualifies for SNAP: refugees and asylees no longer qualify based on that status alone; once they get a green card, they qualify without the 5-year wait. For other green card holders, the 5-year wait still applies, with exceptions such as children under 18.
- Health coverage for children: every child under 19 in New Jersey can enroll in NJ FamilyCare (Cover All Kids) regardless of immigration status. Apply on the NJ FamilyCare site or at 1-800-701-0710. The program's site says eligibility rules will change starting in fall 2026, so check the current rules before you apply. See health care.
- U.S.-citizen children in the household may still receive benefits in their own right. A child's own benefits generally do not count in a parent's public charge review.
- The new public charge rule: for green card applications filed on or after September 18, 2026, officers may consider any means-tested benefit (SNAP, Medicaid, housing assistance and others) received on or after that date. Benefits received earlier count only if they were cash assistance or long-term institutional care. Benefits received by family members are generally not counted.
- Who is exempt: humanitarian categories such as asylees and refugees, T and U visa holders, VAWA self-petitioners and TPS. Family-based, most employment-based and diversity visa applicants are subject to it.
- Litigation: lawsuits against the rule were filed in mid-September 2026. As of September 25, 2026, no court had blocked the rule.

20 · Address change
I moved to Cherry Hill. Do I have to report my new address to USCIS?
Short answer
Generally, most noncitizens in the U.S., including Green Card holders, must report a new address to USCIS within 10 days of moving. That includes a move within Cherry Hill, for example out of Ellisburg to another neighborhood. The easiest way is the change-of-address tool in your USCIS online account; the paper Form AR-11 is also free. If you have a case in immigration court, you must also notify the court within 5 days on Form EOIR-33.
Steps, documents and official links
- Log in to your USCIS account and open Change of Address. Reporting online satisfies the legal requirement; no paper AR-11 is needed.
- Enter the receipt number of every pending case. Otherwise notices may still go to the old address.
- Tell USPS separately. A post office change of address does not update USCIS, and USPS does not forward USCIS mail.
- If you are in court proceedings, file Form EOIR-33/IC within 5 days. The court changes your address only through this form.
- If you have ICE reporting obligations (for example, check-ins set when you were released), update ICE too through the ICE Portal. ICE's page asks for updates within 5 business days of moving.
A and G visa holders and Visa Waiver visitors are exempt from the USCIS requirement.
21 · USCIS
Where is the USCIS office nearest Cherry Hill, and where do I go for biometrics?
Short answer
South Jersey's USCIS field office is in Mount Laurel, about 10 miles east of Cherry Hill: 530 Fellowship Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054. Green card and citizenship interviews take place at field offices. For fingerprints and photos (biometrics), your nearest Application Support Center may be in Philadelphia. No USCIS office accepts walk-ins; always go to the address on your appointment notice.
Steps, documents and official links
| Office | Address | What happens there |
|---|---|---|
| USCIS Mount Laurel Field Office | 530 Fellowship Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054 | Field office for South Jersey: interviews, oath ceremonies |
| USCIS Newark Field Office | Peter Rodino Federal Building, 970 Broad Street, Newark, NJ 07102 | Field office for North Jersey |
| ASC Philadelphia | 10300 Drummond Road, Suite 100, Philadelphia, PA 19154 | Biometrics, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. |
| ASC Elizabeth and ASC Hackensack | 285 North Broad Street, Elizabeth, and 116 Kansas Street, Hackensack | New Jersey's biometrics centers, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. |
| Newark Asylum Office | Gateway 3, 100 Mulberry Street, Suite 199, Newark, NJ 07102 | Asylum interviews, by appointment only |
- Addresses: your case, not distance, decides which office and support center you use. Compare the Mount Laurel address above with your appointment notice before you go; the address on your notice is the one that counts.
- Appointments and questions: USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833), or book online. Appointments are free.
- Processing times: on the USCIS processing times page, pick the form, category and the field office handling your case. Times update monthly.
- Biometrics: the center is assigned on your I-797C notice; you do not choose it, and USCIS does not publish which center serves Cherry Hill. You can reschedule for good cause, at least 12 hours before the existing appointment, through your USCIS online account. Our biometrics guide covers what to bring.
- Your attorney at the interview: since May 18, 2026, attorneys may no longer join field-office interviews remotely, except in limited circumstances. Your attorney has to attend in person.
- Asylum office: asylum interviews are in Newark, about 1.5 hours by car. The office has offered no in-person information services since April 2026.
22 · Court
I live in Cherry Hill. Which immigration court is mine, and how do I check my case?
Short answer
Your hearing notice (the Notice to Appear or a later hearing notice) decides which court you go to. For Cherry Hill residents it may be the Newark court, or the notice may name the Philadelphia court. The two are very different trips, so read the address carefully. The notice also says whether the hearing is in person or by internet. Check your case with your A-number on EOIR's online portal (ACIS) or at 1-800-898-7180.
Steps, documents and official links
| Court | Address | Phone and hours |
|---|---|---|
| Newark | 970 Broad Street, Room 1200, Newark, NJ 07102 | 973-645-3524. Weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; filing window closes at 4 p.m. |
| Philadelphia | Robert N.C. Nix Federal Building, 900 Market Street, Suite 504, Philadelphia, PA 19107 | 215-656-7000. Weekdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
| Elizabeth (detained cases) | 625 Evans Street, Room 148A, Elizabeth, NJ 07201 | 908-787-1355 |
- Distance: Newark is about 1.5 hours from Cherry Hill by car; the Philadelphia court is about 8 miles away. Do not go to the closer court on your own; go to the court named on your notice.
- Online lookup: ACIS needs only your A-number (A + 8 or 9 digits). Your hearing notice is still the official source; the system may show new dates late.
- Internet-based hearings: EOIR posts internet hearing links for judges in both Newark and Philadelphia. Your notice tells you if your hearing is held that way.
- ICE check-ins: ICE's page lists ERO Mount Laurel as the check-in office for South Jersey, Camden County included: 532 Fellowship Road, Suite A, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054, (856) 787-3499, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The page was last updated in 2022 and ICE locations change often, so always go to the address on your notice. Check-ins are scheduled at checkin.ice.gov. If you have a check-in, talk to your attorney before you go.
Where do I find my I-94, and how do I fix an error?
Download your most recent I-94 from CBP's website. Errors made at entry (wrong visa class, name or admit-until date) are corrected by CBP Deferred Inspection. New Jersey's unit is at Newark Liberty Airport, Terminal B International Arrivals, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., (973) 565-8000 ext. 8010 or 8011. Check other locations on CBP's list and call to confirm the hours before you go. These units fix only mistakes made at the time of entry.
23 · Voting and jury duty
I'm not a citizen. Can I register to vote in Cherry Hill, and what if I get a jury summons?
Short answer
No. In New Jersey only U.S. citizens may register and vote, even in local elections; green card holders and other noncitizens may not. Still, the jury list is built from voter rolls, MVC driver records and state income tax filers, so noncitizens can be summoned. Do not ignore a summons. Answer the citizenship question truthfully on the juror qualification questionnaire.
Steps, documents and official links
- Who can register: U.S. citizens who are at least 18 (pre-registration is possible at 17) and have lived in the county for at least 30 days before the election. Registration closes 21 days before each election.
- County election office: Cherry Hill is in Camden County. The requirements and the county's election offices are on Camden County's voter registration page.
- At the MVC and on forms: if the MVC or any other agency offers to register you to vote, answer the citizenship question truthfully. Claiming to be a U.S. citizen may be treated by USCIS as a false claim of citizenship. A driver's license does not make you eligible to vote.
- Consequences: registering or voting as a noncitizen is a federal crime (18 U.S.C. 611 and 1015(f)). In immigration law it can mean permanent inadmissibility, deportability and denial of naturalization.
- Do not fill out voter registration forms handed out door to door or at events.
- Who can serve on a jury: under New Jersey law (N.J.S.A. 2B:20-1), jurors must meet six requirements, one of which is U.S. citizenship.
- If you are summoned: complete the Juror Qualification Questionnaire online in the MyJuryService portal, using the 10-digit participant ID and ZIP code from your summons, or on paper, and answer the citizenship question truthfully. The courts say every juror must complete it even when asking to be excused or rescheduled, and it is not handled by phone. Failing to respond leads to further court action.
- Scams: courts do not call or email asking for your SSN, and they do not demand fines by phone.
Recently naturalized? You can register through the New Jersey Division of Elections or Camden County's voter registration page. Registration closes 21 days before each election, so check the date for the election you want to vote in.
24 · New citizens
I just became a citizen. How do I get a U.S. passport in Cherry Hill?
Short answer
A first U.S. passport is applied for in person on Form DS-11, at an acceptance facility, with your original proof of citizenship. One option near Cherry Hill is the Camden County Clerk: the Blackwood office works by appointment, the Camden office takes walk-ins. An adult passport book costs $165 in total ($130 fee plus $35 acceptance fee). If you must travel abroad within 14 days, book an urgent appointment at the Philadelphia Passport Agency.

| Passport book, under 16 | $135 |
| Adult passport card | $65 |
| Passport card, under 16 | $50 |
| Passport photo | $10 |

- Payment: the totals include the $35 acceptance fee. The county takes its fee in cash or by Visa/MasterCard; the State Department fee is paid by check or money order.
- What to bring: your original naturalization certificate and your ID.
- Other acceptance facilities: enter your Cherry Hill ZIP code in the passport facility locator. These locations accept new applications (DS-11) only.
- Philadelphia Passport Agency: Robert N.C. Nix Federal Building, 9th and Chestnut Streets (9th Street entrance, Suite 100), Philadelphia, PA 19107. Weekdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., appointment only. New Jersey has no passport agency.
- Urgent travel rules: you need proof of travel within 14 days (or a foreign visa needed within 28 days), plus the $60 expedite fee. Book online or at 877-487-2778 (weekdays 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., weekends 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern). Appointments are free; third parties charging for them are scams.

Short answer
Cooper River Park's playground and trail loop, the Croft Farm festivals and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia are free. Barclay Farmstead is free for Cherry Hill residents and children 12 and under; other visitors pay $5. A useful tip: get a library card: it is free for Cherry Hill residents, and the library's Museum Pass program lets you reserve museum passes at no cost.

Free, or free for residents
- Library card: free for Cherry Hill residents and valid for 2 years. A parent signs for children under 14, and you show a photo ID when you apply. Non-residents pay for a card.
- Museum Pass: with a valid Cherry Hill library card you can reserve museum passes for free, up to 45 days ahead, online or at 856-667-0300 (option 2). Some passes are printed at home. You get one reservation per museum per month. The library's page lists the museums in the program.
- Barclay Farmstead: free for residents, children 12 and under and members of the Friends of Barclay Farmstead. The playground and nature trails are here too.

- Barclay Farmstead: a playground, picnic area and the township's scavenger hunt.
- Harvest Festival: pony rides, a mini zoo, pumpkins, and police and fire department activities.
- Battleship New Jersey: older kids tend to love it, but the ladders are steep and small children must be carried in a carrier, not a stroller. Check prices and hours on its website.

Tips for your visit
- Getting there: the consulate is in Manhattan, and a round trip from Cherry Hill often takes the whole day. Plan the route ahead and allow for traffic. Services that can be done by mail (birth and marriage registration) save you the trip.
- Timing: services run in a morning and an afternoon block. Be at the building before your slot.
- Holidays: check the consulate's site for closure days before you book.
- Birth registration: you need the U.S. birth certificate first. Cherry Hill's township office issues certificates only for births that took place in Cherry Hill; for a birth elsewhere, the certificate comes from that town or the state (see birth certificates).
- Documents for Türkiye: New Jersey documents are apostilled in Trenton, not at the consulate (see apostille).
- Military service (askerlik): men born in 2007 must complete their registration (yoklama) by December 31, 2026, at the consulate or on e-Devlet. The paid military service option (dövizle askerlik) for July to December 2026 is the foreign-currency equivalent of 472,653.60 TL, paid in U.S. dollars at the Turkish central bank rate of the payment day, plus a transfer fee (ask the consulate for the current amount); the amount changes on January 1, 2027. It requires a U.S. residence or work permit, 3 years (1,095 days) of work abroad, the MSB online training, residence in the consulate's district and an in-person appointment. Dual citizens born in the U.S. or who came before 18 can defer until the end of age 35 after registering their U.S. citizenship. F-1 students defer through the consulate's Education Attaché.

28 · Apostille
How do I get an apostille on a New Jersey document for use abroad?
Short answer
Birth and marriage certificates, court records and documents notarized in New Jersey get their apostille from the NJ Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services (DORES) in Trenton. Standard service is $25 per document and takes 12 to 20 business days; expedited service is $40 and takes about 8.5 business hours. You order online, then send the original to Trenton. There is no apostille office in Cherry Hill or Camden County.
Steps, documents and official links
- Order online: create and prepay the request on the NJ apostille portal, then send the printed confirmation with the original document. A $2.50 card fee or $1 e-check fee is added.
- Standard service (mail): PO Box 452, Trenton, NJ 08646, by first-class mail, USPS Priority or Certified Mail.
- Expedited service (in person or courier): Customer Service Counter, 33 West State Street, 5th Floor, Trenton, NJ 08608. No USPS for expedited requests; hand-deliver or use UPS/FedEx. Walk-in drop-off runs 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the wait can reach 2.5 hours. Call 609-292-9292 to check same-day availability.
- Vital records: get the certified birth, marriage, divorce or death record from the NJ Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics and Registry, first. If you attach a notarized translation, you get two apostilles and pay two fees. Questions: 609-292-4087.
- No county clerk step: unlike some states, New Jersey does not require a separate County Clerk certification first. DORES certifies signatures of New Jersey notaries, county clerks, Superior Court judges and the State Registrar directly.
- Other states' records: DORES cannot apostille vital records from another state; they must be authenticated in the state that issued them. If your child was born in Philadelphia, the birth certificate is apostilled in Pennsylvania.
